Key Outcomes of the Meeting
The discussions resulted in several significant achievements that will shape the RPOA-IUU agenda for 2024 and beyond:
- Enhancing Data Exchange
Participating countries reiterated the critical role of data sharing in improving monitoring, transparency, and enforcement against IUU fishing. Developing robust mechanisms for information exchange remains central to deterring illegal activities and ensuring accountability within fisheries. - Defining Priorities for 2024
Two priority programs were identified for implementation:- Promoting Decent Working Conditions: Initiatives will be directed toward ensuring fair treatment and safety of workers aboard fishing vessels and in the seafood industry.
- Advancing Market Measures: The development of a catch documentation scheme will enhance traceability, ensuring that seafood products originate from legal and sustainable sources.
- Strengthening Partnerships
Collaboration with regional and international partners was highlighted as essential for capacity building, knowledge sharing, and effective coordination. Leveraging these partnerships will enable RPOA-IUU countries to access the resources and expertise necessary for achieving their objectives.
