Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing (IUUF) undermines marine conservation efforts and can cause an imbalance in environmental, economic, and social sectors. Recently, almost all countries around the world are aware of the harmful impacts of this irresponsible fishing practice and urge them to take appropriate action to address this emerging issue. The extensive efforts that have been made by each country are setting out national legislation, engaging with international partners, and implementing international instruments related to fisheries management and IUU eradication.
To call for a solid commitment from each country, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) marks 5 June as the International Day for the Fight Against llegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing. It will be celebrated each year and bring awareness to the public on the importance of applying and implementing responsible fishing practices, particularly in combating IUU fishing.
Today is the commemoration of the UN-IUU Fishing Day and we hope that the spirit and commitment in promoting responsible fishing practices remain stronger and bigger and always ready to conquer any challenges that hinder our effort to combat IUU fishing.
