RPOA-IUU in collaboration with The Government of The Republic of Indonesia and Non-Aligned Movement Centre for South-South Technical Cooperation (NAM-CSSTC) convened The International Workshop on IUU Fishing for RPOA-IUU Participating Countries and Pacific Countries (Solomon Islands and Palau) in virtual session. The workshop was attended by 42 participants from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Viet Nam. In addition, several keynote speakers from diverse countries and institutions have shared invaluable expertise on this workshop, such as University of Indonesia, Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), FAO-RAP, Marine Stewardship Council, INTERPOL, and SEAFDEC. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstance, the representative of Pacific Countries was unable to attend in this workshop.
This workshop aims to increase mutual understanding regarding aspects in the prevention an eradication of IUU Fishing and to strengthen cooperation amongst RPOA-IUU Participating countries and Pacific Countries in the prevention and eradication of IUU Fishing.
Number of IUU fishing cases still shows significant increases in the midst of COVID-19. It is caused by the limitation of regular and on-board operation and inspection. This workshop is expected can be a strategical platform to share and exchange ideas, thoughts, and experience about how to cope with the challenges of combating IUU Fishing despite COVID-19. Furthermore, the important output from this workshop is to raise awareness and strengthen coordination and cooperation in combating IUU fishing amongst RPOA-IUU Participating Countries.
